We can invest in our own cities, towns

By: Bwanika Nakyesawa

I am toying with the idea of a new urban development concept in line with funding of urban development initiatives. Can’t rich Ugandans, for instance, invest in urban development projects such as housing estates, sports stadia, car parks and recreational centres that are well organised.

The town, municipal and city councils gazette and produce proper plans, then send an appeal to all willing and able Ugandans to invest in estates, commercial centres, etc.

I believe giving an opportunity for citizens to fund such development projects as their own future investment will make urban regions more productive, pro-people and this will minimise urban decay. Of course, this calls for understanding how much such investment can raise the cost of living in urban areas.

I think urban centres like Mbarara, Jinja, Hoima, Ndejje (university town), Kabale (university town), Mukono (university town), among others, should be planned in line with the above concept instead of the slum-like set-ups developing around these important towns.
