533,387 refugees and asylum seekers in the DRC, of whom 52% are women.
99.3% of refugees in the DRC live in rural areas, and 74% of refugees are settled outside camps or refugee sites.
2,949 refugees have voluntarily returned from the DRC to Rwanda since January 2018.
Work with partners
With the Government of the DRC, in close cooperation with the National Refugee Commission (CNR), UNHCR provides international protection and assistance to those of concern.
UNHCR works with 16 national and international implementing partners:
ACTION AID, ACTED, ADES, ADSSE, AID, AIRD, ADRA, COOPI, CNR, DRC,
INTERSOS, NRC, SAVE CONGO, TSF, WAR CHILD Netherlands and WAR CHILD United Kingdom. UNHCR is also working with operational partners.
Coordination Mechanisms: As a leader of the Protection Cluster, UNHCR coordinates the Protection and Prevention component of the National Strategy to Combat Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV). As part of the Shelter / M & E Cluster, UNHCR is also coordinating the Shelter Working Group. In conjunction with IOM, UNHCR is coordinating the CCCM (Management and Coordination of Displacement Sites) Working Group and jointly with OCHA, the National Cash Working Group.
