UN and Africa: focus on South Sudan, refugees in Kenya and UNAMID

Refugee movements from South Sudan a "disturbing trend"

Thousands of refugees have arrived in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) after fleeing South Sudan, in what the UN has described as a "disturbing trend". Around 7,000 new arrivals have been registered in the DRC in the last month by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) after fleeing war-torn South Sudan. Hundreds more have recently arrived in neighbouring Uganda. Nearly 90 per cent are women and children. Veronica Reeves spoke with UNHCR Public Information Officer Teresa Ongaro and asked her what has prompted the sudden movement of people.

Rain exacerbates cholera outbreak at refugee complex in Kenya

Heavy rainfall has exacerbated a dangerous cholera outbreak at the world's largest site for displaced people, according to UNHCR. More than 1,000 have been fallen sick due to cholera at the Dadaab complex in Kenya, which is home to nearly 350,000 refugees and asylum seekers, the majority from Somalia. The water-borne bacterial illness is blamed for at least 10 deaths since November. Priscilla Lecomte spoke to Osman Yussuf Ahmed who is working with UNHCR in Dadaab and asked him to describe the situation there.

"Responsive" UN force helps keep peace in Darfur, despite ongoing attacks

The security situation in Darfur has broadly stabilized over the past two years, according to the Force Commander of the joint African Union/United Nations operation, UNAMID. However, Lieutenant General Paul Mella says peacekeepers continue to face numerous challenges, including armed attacks, as they carry out their core mandate of protecting millions of internally displaced people or IDPs. There was a raid on a UN patrol in North Darfur on Thursday, in which one peacekeeper was injured. Joshua Mmali caught up with the Tanzanian Force Commander, who leaves the mission this month.
