Govt readies sh40bn for animal restocking

Publish Date: KAMPALA,The Ugandan government will increase money for animal restocking for Lango, Acholi, Teso and West Nile sub regions.

Addressing crowds at Akura Sub County, Alebtong district minister of state for northern Uganda Rebecca Amuge Otengo said the money will increase from sh20b to sh40b for the four sub regions in the next financial year.

Under animal restocking programme sh20b was used but now President Museveni has directed that it should be added to sh40bn in the coming financial year," Otengo said.

The Office of the Prime Minister has been implementing the animal restocking project in 55 districts of eastern and northern Uganda after people lost their livestock during the Lord`s Resistance Army (LRA) insurgency and to Karimojong cattle raiders.

It is aimed at increasing household income to reduce poverty and rebuilding the national herd according to Otengo. "People who lost their body parts during LRA war will also be compensated and as well as women’s group," she said.

Otengo added that government will also pay those who seek legal redress because of the livestock lost during insurgency after verification.

She said by going into the next elections, National Resistance Movement (NRM) will prioritise the programme to eradicate poverty.

She commended Uganda People Congress (UPC) President Jimmy Akena for pledging allegiance to President Museveni.

Otengo handed over 150 animals for restocking to residents of Akura and Abako sub counties on the same day.
