Uganda: President Agrees to Irish Training of Uganda Aviators

President Yoweri Museveni has agreed to the plans by the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) to train Ugandans in the aviation sector.

The President who was speaking during a meeting with visiting Irish aviation officials at Kyankwanzi State Lodge yesterday observed that the training would help Ugandans acquire knowledge and expertise in the aviation sector. "I welcome the interest by the Irish Aviation Authority. Uganda loses over US$420 million a year to other airlines," he said.

Mr. Museveni also agreed to the proposal that Atlantic Flight Training Academy partner with Soroti Aviation School to train more Ugandan instructors, flight operations inspectors and engineers.

According to the Managing Director of the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Dr. Rama Makuza, the training by the IAA will ensure that Ugandans get European aviation standards which will in turn make it easy for them to work anywhere in the world.

Mr. Michael Norton who is the Director of the Board of Irish Aviation Authority, expressed happiness over the decision by the Government of Uganda to revive Uganda Airlines. "It is a fantastic opportunity for Uganda because of the geographical position in the region. Uganda is ready for the airline," he said.

Mr. Ralph James, who is Director of Safety and Regulation of the Irish Aviation Authority, disclosed that the Irish government has promised to help the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority to martial capacity and develop aviation safety and security. "Regulation, safety and security are the cornerstones on which the airline industry is built," said Mr. Ralph
