New details on the investigations into the Makerere University fire point to arson by intruders who entered the Main Building at night on the fateful day, Daily Monitor has learnt.
A source close to the investigations, who accessed the video footage from CCTVs, told Daily Monitor last evening that the clips show about 10 intruders wearing black jackets entering the Ivory Tower (Main Building) at night before the building went up in flames.
He, however, said police took away the footage for investigations before they finished reviewing the clips.
The source also said they had not identified the intruders or the time they exited the building.
Mr Fred Enanga, the police spokesperson, confirmed that detectives were reviewing CCTV footage from Makerere University which will guide them in the investigations and the cause of the fire, but declined to reveal further information about the intruders.
"We have four footages obtained from the university that are still being scrutinised because the faces seen in the footages are not clear," Mr Enanga said.
When contacted for a comment on the alleged intruders, the university secretary, Mr Yusuf Kiranda, declined to divulge information, saying they were waiting for the outcome of the investigations. Mr Kiranda said the university submitted all the CCTV footages on other buildings facing the Ivory Tower like the one at Centenary Bank, St Francis Chapel, St Augustine Chapel and another footage from the Main Building.
"We are waiting for the police report on the cause of the fire and police promised us to give a report on Wednesday (today)," Mr Kiranda added.
