UGANDA: 9 BODIES RETRIEVED FROM LAKE ALBERT AFTER TWO BOATS CAPSIZE

KIBAALE (UGANDA), Sept 8 – Nine bodies of fishermen have been retrieved from the waters of Lake Albert when a fishing boat capsize following strong winds in an accident on Friday morning.

The boat, carrying 17 fishermen, were a few meters away to dock when struck by strong winds at about 4 am resulting in its capsize.

The chairman of the Nguse Beach management Unit (BMU) David Musinguzi told New Vision that 7 were rescued while 10 went missing.

“We had alarms as people yelled for help from the waters and we immediately used another boat to rescue them,” said Musinguzi. He said that out of the 17 they only managed to rescue 7.

He said that efforts to save other people were hampered by the heavy down pour and the strong winds that raged on for some hours. “We also feared for our lives as we tried to rescue these people,” said Musinguzi.

The 9 bodies have been handed over to relatives for burial. The dead are from the sub counties of Muhorro, Mpeefu. Muhorro town council and Ndaiga sub county.
