Tough fight for Uganda after Ethiopia, Kenya enter full teams


Uganda must dig deep to keep honours at home after Ethiopia and Kenya confirmed entries in all the four Africa Cross-country Championships race categories.The traditional giants have full squads in the 6km junior women’s race, 8km junior men, 8km senior men and 12km senior men’s events.

South Africa, who hosted the inaugural continental event in 2011, Rwanda and Burundi also have full teams but will be little worry for the home side. By press time yesterday, Cameroon, Morocco, Gambia, Eritrea, Tunisia, Sychelles, Malawi, Sudan, Madagascar, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Comoros, Somalia, Nigeria, Zambia, Mauritius and Benin, had confirmed their competitors for the Sunday event at Kololo Airstrip.

Overall, 30 countries are expected to compete. Teams start arriving tomorrow. Moses Kipsiro, a three-time World Cross-country Championships medallist, is Uganda’s biggest medal hopeful. He will feature in the men’s 12km race.
