Three suspected bank robbers arrested in Kampala

KAMPALA

Three people have been arrested by the Police Flying Squad over allegations of several bank robberies in Kampala.
The trio is said to have been operating in several areas in the city and breaking into different Forex bureaus and banks like Bank of Africa Kawempe branch, Stanbic Bank Nakasero and ABC Forex Bureau in Kampala, among others.
The trio which was arrested last week is said to have stolen money, computers, and other items from the banks. “We have recovered an Ipsum van, with registration number UAN 433L which they have been using to carry stolen property,” Mr Patrick Onyango, the Kampala metropolitan spokesperson told journalists on Monday at Central police station.

The arrests come as Police struggle to contain incidents of bank robberies since a major one in January 2007 that involved three armed robbers who entered Stanbic Bank IPS building branch and made off with over Shs702.4 million. Recently, a related robbery happened in the same bank.
Mr Onyango said banks and forex bureaus should deploy well trained guards to avoid such incidents. “They should use burglar proofs because thieves just cut locks with welding machines,” Mr Onyango said.
Mr Onyango said investigations are going on to establish the suspects’ client list who will also be arrested and charged for buying stolen property.
“Investigations are ongoing and the group will soon appear in court on robbery elated charges,” Mr Onyango said.
