Statement by the spokesperson on the re-launch of inter-Burundian dialogue in Entebbe on 28 December 2015

The relaunch of the inter-Burundian dialogue which took place at State House, in Entebbe on 28 December 2015 marks a key step in bringing together all components of Burundian society and political forces.

The personal commitment of President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda has allowed to create a positive momentum in the implementation of the Eastern African Community (EAC) and African Union (AU) mandated mediation.

Through their presence and participation, the government of Burundi, political parties and civil society demonstrated commitment to genuine dialogue. In light of the critical situation in Burundi, the EU calls on all parties to agree on the way forward and to engage in the next steps of the dialogue in Arusha, Tanzania. Only a political solution can bring an end to the violence.

The EU will continue to engage with AU and EAC in their efforts to protect the population and to prevent further violence.
