Soldier shoots two forest reserve encroachers

KIBAALE

A UPDF officer attached to National Forestry Authority (NFA) on Monday shot and injured two people following an alleged attack on him by irate encroachers in Kibaale District.

The suspect, an officer under the Kagadi NFA Sector, shot and injured John Tumwesige and Vedasti Sebukino, all residents of Katoma Village in Nyamarunda Sub-county.

The duo was injured during an operation mounted by NFA in the Kangombe Forest Reserve.“It’s true one UPDF officer shot at a mob of encroachers who were holding machetes and spears when they learnt our staff was on duty,” said Mr Bruce Amanya, the Kagadi NFA sector manager.

Mr Amanya said the soldier fired in the air to disperse the irate mob, who had attacked the NFA staff, but accidentally injured the two encroachers. “This was done in self defence because a mob of over 80 people, carrying machetes attacked us and we were all under the mercy of one soldier. So we shall take all the procedures and file the case since some exhibits have been confiscated from the encroachers,” Mr Amanya added.

The medical superintendent of Kagadi Hospital, Dr James Olowo, said one of the injured encroachers, who was admitted to the facility, would be transferred to Fort Portal hospital because his condition has worsened.
