Silk Liquid Opens Its Doors

Ever since word started going around that Club Silk was expanding its wings, Kampala party animals have been eagerly waiting to see the club’s new homes.

The moment finally came last Wednesday when the first home outside Industrial area was opened. Silk Liquid, located at The Village mall in Bugolobi, officially opened. And to those who thought it would be a nightclub, it is not it is instead a lounge and bar.

The opening night was by invite only. And despite the chill and bad weather on Wednesday evening, which led to heavy traffic in the city, the organizers started at exactly 7pm just like the invites read. At the entrance, two women welcomed the guests by placing a red wrist band on your hand.

As one walked upstairs, there were male ushers dressed in quilts in company of female ushers also in quilts, but theirs were reduced to a length that would give Fr Simon Lokodo a heart attack. All the guests were first treated to entertainment, which was at the lounge’s terrace. However, a ribbon and light barred guests from the main lounge.

Guitarist Myko Ouma and his friends: Festo Mugume (on the keyboard), Sam Bisaaso (on the bass guitar) and Ambrose Tugume (on the drums) entertained guests. They served a couple of cover tunes that included Jamaican reggae tunes. They turned up the heat doing Ouma’s single, Club Banger.

Then came the moment that all the guests were waiting for Club Silk’s proprietor, Elvis Sekyanzi, gave a brief speech on why he started the Liquid. The lounge is fitted with Jonnie Walker bar, which is fully stocked with Uganda Breweries whiskies such as Red Label, Black Label, Double Black Label and Gold Label Reserve, among others.

There is also a VIP section, which is accessed upon purchasing a bottle of whisky. However, at the launch, it was reserved for guests. There is also a wine lounge fitted with various brands of wine. The counter is the catchiest the back has some stone tiles, which reflect off the light – giving a good beam to your eyes, and it is long and big enough to ensure no congestion.

Sekyanzi told The Observer this is the beginning of the club’s expansion programme.

“In December, we will open up another lounge like this at Acacia mall [in Kamwokya]. Then next year, we shall open up another in Mbale and Mbarara,” he said. He also revealed that the name Liquid came from the fact that they had signed a partnership with Uganda Breweries to make the whisky bar.

Club Silk has established its niche for throwing tantalizing parties that leave guests with a bit of amnesia. And it was the same case last Wednesday all the whiskies were on the house and guests tried out all sorts of cocktails that were on the menu.

The place was opened to the general public on Thursday and it was still Ouma and his friends doing their thing. Important to note is that the pricing of drinks in the lounge is quite different from your ordinary hangout.

For instance, local beers go for Shs 7,000, while all imported beer goes for Shs 10,000.

Silk Liquid does not charge for entrance and is open Monday to Sunday. However, it does not host any private parties. Sorry for those who were planning busikis you will have to wait for the rules to be changed.
