UPDF to beef up Pearl of Africa Rally security

Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) will join Uganda Police, SWAT (a private security firm) and FMU safety marshals to man security during Day Two of the 17 Shell V-Power Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally in Mubende, 150km north west of the capital Kampala.

Although 80 per cent of the event is to be run in closed roads around forests and plantations, the organisers have decided to beef up security on the route. “On Monday, we surveyed the route with UPDF personnel from Mubende as well as police,” Deo Sembatya, the FMU deputy safety officer told Daily Monitor yesterday. “UPDF will provide about 80 personnel. Just like last year, the Air Force will also provide a chopper to act as the aerial route opener,” he added. Meanwhile, Hima Cement has announced a Shs20m sponsorship package for the weekend event.

Allan Ssemakula, the Hima marketing director, handed over the cheque to David Bitalo, the event Clerk of the Course, in Kampala, yesterday. Hima were title sponsors of the event between 2000-2004. Elsewhere, Jean Todt, the FIA president, arrives for the event today.
