PRESIDENT MUSEVENI IN KAMPALA TO VISIT TANZANIAN TROOPS INJURED IN DRC WHILE ON UN PEACKEEPING DUTY

KAMPALA, President Yoweri Museveni of neighbouring Tanzania was in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, on Sunday to visit Tanzanian soldiers who are being treated at Nakasero Hospital here after being injured in the most deadly attack on United Nations peacekeepers in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

At least 14 peacekeepers were killed and more than 40 wounded in the restive eastern DRC on Dec 7 in the deadliest attack by gunmen on members of the peacekeeping officers, who were all Tanzanian, part of the UN Stabilization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO).

President Yoweri Museveni on Sunday visited the Tanzanian UN peacekeepers, who are admitted to Nakasero Hospital in Kampala. The Tanzanian peacekeepers were wounded in the attack by gunmen believed to belong to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a Ugandan Islamist group active in the DRC's North Kivu Province, near the border with Uganda.

The rebels attacked the UN peacekeepers' base in the village of Mamundioma, some 30 kilometres northeast of Beni territory to the Uganda border.

The President, who was accompanied during the Christmas Eve hospital visit by Brigadier-General S.S. Makoma, the First Secretary at the Tanzania Embassy in Uganda, also met some of the doctors attending to the wounded Tanzanian UN peacekeepers.
