Ouagadougou: Civil unions have fallen by more than 25% in one year

The number of civil marriages contracted in the commune of Ouagadougou has fallen by more than 25% between 2022 and 2021, according to the communication service of the municipality.

3,681 civil marriages were celebrated in the commune of Ouagadougou in 2022 against 4,947 in 2021, a decrease of 25.59%, we read in a post published Tuesday morning on the Facebook page of the commune of Ouagadougou.

In 2022, there were 3,340 monogamous marriages and 341 polygamous marriages compared to 4,518 monogamous marriages and 429 polygamous marriages in 2021, adds the same source.

In Burkina, in addition to civil marriage, there are religious and customary marriages (notably the PPS), not yet recognized by law but nevertheless in the majority.

In September 2022, the Ministry of Justice organized a workshop to validate the draft law on the Persons and Family Code.

Proposals for the recognition of customary and religious marriages, through their transcriptions in civil status registers, have been added to the code dating from 1989.
