You know how they say house helps are a necessary evil they really are, but I have got to a point where I have given up on them. After having three house helps in a year, I started thinking that maybe I have a problem. But from my recent experience, I realised that it was not me.
This girl only stayed for two days. She came home on Saturday morning and found when I had done all the house work. So there was nothing much she had to do.
I prepared her breakfast, served her and as we ate, I gave her a brief of what she was supposed to do.
Since I was going somewhere, I finished my breakfast quickly and took my cup and plate to the sink, meanwhile she was still eating. By the time I was ready, she had finished her breakfast and had gone into the room she was meant to sleep in but had left her cup and plate at the table.
I called her and told her that after eating, she was supposed to take her plate to the kitchen. She said yes but instead of doing as she had been told, she walked back into her room. It was weird but anyway, I carried her things and put them in the sink.
The next day when I was going to church, I briefed her again and emphasised that she was not supposed to leave the house until I came back.
However, on my way from church, I found her on the way. When I asked her why she had left, she had no explanation, meanwhile, she had prepared steamed matooke on a stove claiming not to know how to light a charcoal stove and yet she had lit it the previous day.
However, I ignored the matooke issue and focused on the fact that she could not leave home while I was away. She told me she had heard. After the talk I got the charcoal stove, put charcoal and showed her how to light it even when I knew she could do it.
The next day which was a Monday, I still told her not to leave home. However, I think the moment, I turned the corner, she also left the house because someone called an hour after I had left to tell me they had seen my “girl”.
I cannot say that I was mad, because I was not I was very scared.
That information alone messed up my day I kept worrying about people breaking into the house and robbing us of all that we have, something happening to her among other things. So when I went home, I just told her to pack all her things, gave her half of her month’s salary and sent her back to where she came from the following day.
The maid before her used to eat the baby’s food, especially the formula and the first one did not want to carry my two-month-old baby because she would throw-up on her.
The day she was fired was when she almost dropped the girl because she had thrown-up on her arm, my husband picked her half way to the ground and the moment the baby was safe in his arms, he told her that she was fired.
I know that just like these house helps, we as their employers have weaknesses but these maids also have a problem because if you know you have come to take care of a baby but instead end up either eating their food, or you cannot stand normal baby ways like throwing up or cannot listen when they tell you something, you have no business in my house.
So, I have resolved to do away with maids after all my daughter has a nanny, I can always find a way of getting my house work done.
