NCS gives FUBA air-tickets to Afrobasket worth 80million

National Council of Sports has given the men and women national basketball teams 32 air tickets worth shillings 80 million to allow them travel for the FIBA Africa Zone V Afrobasket Qualifiers in Cairo, Egypt.

The Uganda Gazelles and Silverbacks fly out to Cairo early Friday ahead of the tournament between March 12-18.

NCS chairman Bosco Onyik announced the support saying it is because Federations of Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA) is well organized as well as producing good performances.

The team was flagged off by the state minister for sports Charles Bakkabulindi at NCS offices in Lugogo Thursday afternoon.

He advised the contingent to ensure that Uganda performs well and ease restoration of memorandum of understanding between the two governments to promote sports.

NCS had offered part of the FUBA budget of ($33, 000) but was forced to come in to give full support because the federation had failed to raise the rest of the money.

FUBA president Ambrose Tashobya appreciated NCS saying that without the support, they had failed to take the teams for the tournament.

NCS general secretary Nicholas Muramagi said that the gesture was the beginning of their new policy to fund performing associations/federations in Ugandan sports.
