A social sciences lecturer at Ndejje University has described as absurd President Museveni’s persistent claim that arts courses are useless and that Uganda needs to concentrate on natural sciences in order to develop.
Speaking during the orientation of hundreds of first-year students at the university’s Kampala campus, Ntumwa Matovu said: “Development is not possible if social sciences are not taught to students. There will be no thinking look at a situation where we have engineers, doctors and the like doing their work without people to help in the thinking before any development is done such as infrastructure.”
President Museveni has repeatedly derided arts and humanities, urging tertiary institutions to concentrate on sciences.
