Movie Review – the Maze Runner Opens Tonight

The trailer looks something like a remake of The Hunger Games and I can’t wait to see what the movie has to offer.

Picking off a blockbuster sometimes gets directors eggs on their faces. The story is about Thomas who wakes up in an elevator, remembering nothing but his own name. He emerges into a world of about 60 teen boys who have learnt to survive in a completely enclosed environment, subsisting on their own agriculture and supplies. A new boy arrives every 30 days.

The original group has been in ‘The Glade’ for two years, trying to find a way to escape through the maze that surrounds their living space. They have begun giving up hope. Then a comatose girl arrives with a strange note, and their world begins to change.

There are some great, fast-paced action scenes, particularly those involving the nightmarish Grievers who feed the boys. The politics of the situation is fascinating. Well, running for your life in a giant maze also raises big questions about identity and integrity. Is safety and security worth giving up your right to information and choice?

The movie starts tonight at The Hub, Oasis mall.
