MOTORISED TRISHAWS BANNED FROM OPERATING IN UGANDAN CAPITAL

KAMPALA,The Minister for Kampala, Beti Kamya, has banned motorised trishaws, more popularly referred to as tuk tuks here, from operating as a means of commercial public transport in the Ugandan capital, Kampala.

Tuk tuk operators have been engaged in fights with commuter taxi operators in the city and many have been arrested and others have sustained injuries.

Kamya said here Monday that the auto rickshaws are not licensed to carry passengers and she has directed traffic police to impound them and arrest the operators.

She also directed the police in Kampala to compile a report of the perpetrators and aggressors of violence in the transport industry for appropriate action because they can longer be accommodated in the city.

"Traffic police must arrest and apprehend. I've just had a meeting with the commander of the Kampala Metropolitan Police and we have agreed that he is going to deploy police to arrest tricycles operators who are in commercial passenger transport business," said Kamya.
