Minziro hits at top teams over foreign players (The Citizen (Tanzania))

Dar es Salaam. Four top amateur golfers are set to play for Tanzania in the forthcoming All-Africa Amateur Golf Team Championship (AAGTC) scheduled for Limuru in Kenya next month.

The competition is played over 72 holes stroke-play format.

The four, Victor Joseph, Abbas Adam, Ally Mcharo and Isaac Wanyeche, will pitch camp in Arusha and Moshi under the new national golf coach, Hassan Kadio, ahead of the event.

Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) chairman Joseph Tango expressed the union commitment for better results, saying the four amateur golfers were in inspiring form and could make a difference for Tanzania in Kenya.

“We are motivated for bigger fortunes and we recognise the fact that the players realize that challenge,” he said.

“They will train at Arusha Gymkhana Club, Moshi Gymkhana Club and TPC Club in view to experience different golf courses and improve their game,” he added.

Last time the country won an international tournament was 13 years ago at the East African Challenge Trophy.

The Team finished forth in 2014 season of Zone V held in Entebe, Uganda.

This will be the first time for Kenya to host the prestigious Africa Amateur Golf Team Championship to tee off from October 12 to 16. More than 16 African countries are expected to take part in this continental golf tournament which was previously hosted by South Africa, Swaziland, Uganda, Namibia and Egypt.

Last year, the event was held in Swaziland where South Africa, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Swaziland, Botswana, Mozambique, Mauritius, Reunion Island, Uganda and Namibia participated in the tournament.

This tournament comes in the wake of Uganda hosting the Africa Zone VI golf tournament at the par 72 Kitante Golf Course at the Uganda Golf Club, while Rwanda will later this year host the East African Golf Challenge.
