Minister warns on politics of religion

Rukungiri- Information and National Guidance minister Jim Muhwezi has asked NRM party members to desist from promoting sectarianism.

This, he said, contradicts the party ideology of pan-Africanism, nationalism, social economic transformation and democracy.

Maj Gen Muhwezi was addressing Rukungiri District NRM delegates during a conference attended by both winners and losers in the party primaries on Tuesday at Makobore High School.

The minister’s comments follow a document that is being circulated in Rukungiri, which among other things, calls on Anglicans not to vote Catholic candidates.

Those circulating it claim it has been authored by political and religious leaders affiliated to one of the Anglican churches in Kigezi sub-region.

“This August 2, document of is fake and is being circulated by people who hate patriotism and want to tarnish the party’s image. Its contents are baseless, please don’t follow it,” Maj Gen Muhwezi told the delegates.

He added: “Some of the issues in the letter are obvious lies, like the person who signed as Can John Muhumuza, who died five years ago and that the synod meeting that resolved (on) all those (issues) in the document was held on Sunday. Synod does not sit on Sundays that only makes it fake.”

The minister warned that security personnel are investigating the document to establish its authors who shall be prosecuted in courts of law once found adding that they will not allow segregation.
