Rakai: The Kkooki chiefdom has requested Mengo, the seat of Buganda Kingdom, to renovate the cultural and historical sites in the area.

The Kkooki chiefdom prime minister, Ms Gertrude Ssebuggwawo, told her Buganda counterpart, Mr Charles Peter Mayiga, during his visit to Kkooki County to fundraise for the Katubi Tombs’ reconstruction that the sites could get destroyed due to neglect.

Ms Ssebuggwawo told Mr Mayiga the rehabilitated cultural sites were bound to become tourist attractions and a source of revenue for the chiefdom.

Potential tourism sites

She also highlighted other potential tourist attractions in Kkooki that need rehabilitation such as Kyalulangira where hippopotamus are often seen, Kiya Hill, which is believed to be the highest in Buganda region, and Kibaale Waterfalls, which she said could generate hydro-electricity.

In response, the Buganda prime minister said all cultural institutions and sites are important and must be sustained as part of the country’s history and heritage. He said the reason why Kkooki and Buganda agreed to merge long ago was to jointly face such challenges.

More than Shs35 million was raised for the reconstruction of the Kasubi Tombs.
