Masindi chosen to pilot community policing

Masindi. Masindi District has been chosen by Uganda Police to pilot community policing, according to the district vice chairperson, Mr Melekizedek Kanaginagi Ateenyi.
Mr Kanaginagi, who was giving the action report to the district council on Tuesday, said under this scheme, each village in the district will recruit 30 crime preventers who will be trained to man the security of their respective areas.
The scheme also involves establishing a police booth at every trading centre with three motorcycles and a minimum of six armed police personnel, who will work with the crime preventers.
“Police officers in the district will also increase from 169 to 330,” Mr Kanaginagi said.
The new arrangement will see the district getting two more police stations in Kabango and Kyatiri town boards. The pilot scheme is expected to reduce the number of crimes committed in the district.
However, although councillors welcome the development, they also demand that Masindi District be given special treatment when recruiting police cadets and constables at the Police Training School in Kabalye.
Mr John Bagada, the secretary for production and councillor for Nyangahya Division, said the district offered land for the construction of the police training school but many of its children are left out during recruitment.
The speaker, Mr Ronald Kyomuhendo, said the matter will be forwarded to the relevant authorities for consideration.

The number of crime preventers to be recruited in each District.
