Mak student leaders on the spot over Shs24m

Makerere University students have petitioned the dean of students, accusing their leaders of failure to account for Shs24m.

The university in September released Shs24.6m meant for the university guild projects. However, it is alleged some student leaders who received the money did not put it to proper use.

In a November 13 petition to the dean, Mr Cypriano Kabagambe, the students guild representative councils (GRCS) led by Mr Jacinto Okello expressed dissatisfaction over the misuse of the guild funds, saying most guild projects have remained incomplete.

They accused the guild president, Mr David Bala, and the finance minister, Mr Micheal Kijjambu, of lack of accountability.

When contacted, Mr Bala confirmed the allegations but denied misusing any guild funds.

“Personally, there is no money I ate and if there is anyone with evidence, let them come and pin me. Those ministers who will be found guilty must face the law because we need transparency,” he said.

The finance minister said his role was to give out the money to the respective ministries and that he could not in turn supervise the projects because it is not his responsibility.

Efforts to get a comment from Mr Kabagambe were futile as his mobile phone was switched off.
