Lyantonde: Lyantonde Town is facing water shortage following the failure by the Town Council to pay electricity bills amounting to Shs14m.

The town has not been able to pump water from Lake Kachera for a month after power distribution company Umeme switched off electricity late December.

According to the district health officer, Dr Obo Okoth, Lyantonde Hospital has been the most hit since there is no budget for it to buy water from vendors who charge high prices. Mr Okoth said a lot of water is needed to keep the hospital and its equipment clean.

The hospital administrator, Mr Paul Male Kyateka, said patients and hospital workers are now forced to line up as early as 3am to access water at the only borehole located in Kaliiro B Cell.

The town council chairperson, Mr Elea Sewandigi said the electricity bill will be cleared soon, adding that the situation will normalize. The district has experienced drought for months since last year.
