LTDH rejects “any pressure” on Judiciary

On the 46th anniversary of its creation, the Tunisian League of Human Rights (LTDH) said in a statement Saturday it was opposed to "pressure" on the judiciary, calling for the establishment of procedures to ensure the "effective" independence of the judiciary.

The league strongly condemned the "targeting of political activists" and the arrest of citizens for their political affiliation, denouncing "the abuses faced by detainees."

It said it had warned, after July 25, against "the reign of an autocratic regime that runs counter to the principles of participatory power."

In this context, the League denounced "the restriction of freedom of information and the harassment of journalists", calling for the acceleration of the withdrawal of Decree-Law No. 2022-54 of September 13, 2022, relating to the fight against offences relating to information and communication systems.

The fight against crime and corruption can only take place in the respect of the law and the rights of detainees, it recalled, warning against "any instrumentalisation of the state's mechanisms to repress political opponents and intimidate the opposition.

The LTDH also reaffirmed its commitment to the achievements of the Revolution, calling on the civil society to be vigilant and to pool efforts to confront any violation of freedoms.
