KHC blame pitch for Maseno woes

Kampala: A bad workman blames his tools, so goes an old adage. Kampala Hockey Club was not any different as players blamed the grass surface on which they competed in last weekend’s Maseno Cup in Kenya.

The Lugogo-based club managed quarterfinal and semifinal finishes for the women and men respectively.

The women, who lost one and drew two games in the pool, also lost to Niamira in the quarterfinals while the men lost 1-0 to eventual champions St Anthony Boys School, Kitale in the semifinals on Sunday. The men had earlier lost one and won three pool games. “We are not well acquainted with playing on grass,” KHC goalkeeper Ronald Kawalya told Daily Monitor on the team’s arrival at Lugogo. “It is very bumpy and thus made players less certain on how they could stop the ball,” he added.

According to the goalkeeper, the team also had to adopt to new tactics in order to cope with the demanding nature of the pitch.

“We also had to adjust to a diamond formation after our first pool game such that we could have depth in attack and quick cover when on the back foot.”

Women’s coach Moses Nsereko feels that fielding nine players instead of 11 in all games made the trip to Maseno an ultimate preparation for the national league that is only three weeks away.

“The team put on a good show on a very challenging grass pitch and also spending a weekend together as a team on and off the pitch greatly improved the team spirit and understanding among us,” Nsereko said.
