Friedhoff gifts rowers with ergometer

KAMPALA. Rowing in Uganda is fast tracking well wishers and funders from the outside world. One in a very long queue of foreign financiers is Dutch coach Thomas Friedhoff.

On Sunday, the last day of the East and Central Africa Rowing Club Championships at Kisubi Beach, Friedhoff for the umpteenth time, provided support to Ugandan rowing. This time, he gifted the fraternity with a concept machine. In the past he has helped the rowers through their training drills both on local and international arenas.

On handing over the machine to Uganda Rowing Federation (URF), Friedhoff said he hoped that the machine will be used effectively to help rowers in their training. The machine costs about $3000 (Shs7.5m)“The value isn’t the most important aspect of this machine but what it can do for the rower,” Friedhoff remarked. “Hopefully you (URF) can use this machine to help the rowers with their training and maybe to qualify for the 2016 Olympics,” the Dutch coach added.

According to Maroons Aqua coach Rodrick Muhumuza, the concept machine commonly known as an ergometer, is to simulate rowing actions on land and it helps to monitor a rower’s speed and power.

URF had in the past acquired two concept machines but one broke down a month to the regional championship as its demand stepped up.Uganda Olympic Committee president, William Blick, presided over the closing day of the regatta where he implored URF to grow the sport all over the country.“As UOC, we have a great interest in rowing and we believe that Uganda can become a world powerhouse in this sport,” Blick said.

Adding as he thanked Friedhoff “We have the water bodies and talented athletes. The federation should continue to get equipments like this one (ergometer) and spread them to all rowing centres.”

Helping handThomas Friedhoff. The Dutchman has continually supported Uganda’s rowing and is not about to stop.
