Former IDPs Panic as UPDF Conduct Census in Gulu

There was panic in Oroko village in Palaro sub County, Gulu District after UPDF officers stormed return sites of former Internally Displaced persons, to aid in conducting census in the disputed district borders.

The army were deployed to conduct in disputed areas between Gulu and Amuru districts, where locals have recentlky been embroiled in land wrangles.

After Amuru was curved out of Gulu in 2006, the two districts have been locked up in bitter border disputes with each, claiming ownership of over 10kilomenter boundary stretch.

The areas under contention are Okidi parish in Atiak Sub County, Amuru District, Lagony and Mede in the areas of Gwayi.

One of the residents, Mr Solomon Ojera, said the presence of UPDF at the return villagers reminds them of the hard times they went through during the two decades war.

“It reminds us of the days, when we were ordered by the army to vacate our homesteads and get into IDP camps, where we led miserable lives,” he said.

The LC I Chairperson of the area, Mr Justine Otto admitted that at there was fear and panic at the onset of the army’s participation the enumeration process but the locals are now getting used.

“UPDF participation has helped a lot. There were fears that the locals might turn rowdy on the numerators, following counter accusation among the locals in the two sub counties,” he added.

Deputy RDC Gulu, Andrew Moses Awany, who visited the disputed areas, asked the locals to cooperate and give the army accurate and credible data.

Deputy Army Fourth Division Spokesperson, 2nd Lt. Wilson Kato Agaba said the army was involved after consultation with UBoS officials.
Ministry of Land officials are set to visit the disputed areas late this year to resolve the brewing tension between the two communities.
