EC warns Bubulo West aspirants against forgery

The Electoral Commission has warned aspiring candidate in Bubulo West Constituency in Manafwa District against forging academic papers in order to contest for the seat.

EC chairman Badru Kiggundu said candidates without proper academic documents should desist from using forged papers to stand for elections. He said the government had resolved to take stern action against people who forge academic papers to stand for elections.

“The government loses colossal sums of money to replace people who are found to have forged academic papers. As a commission, we cannot allow this to continue. We are in touch with educational institutions to verify all academic papers submitted to EC,” he said.

Mr Kiggundu made the remarks on Friday while addressing stakeholders in Manafwa at a meeting that sought to find ways through which the Commission could organise a free and fair by-election within the stipulated laws and guidelines in Bubulo West Constituency.

Replacing Kipoi Nominations for the bye-election to replace former MP Tonny Kipoi are slated for March 24, while campaigns will run betweet March 27 and April 7. The elections are slated for April 10.

Bubulo West has 64,749 voters with 145 gazetted polling stations. The seat fell vacant early last month after MP Kipoi was pushed out of Parliament for failing to represent his constituency for 15 consecutive seatings.

Mr Kipoi is currently holed up in DR Congo with some reports alleging that he was arrested in the country for conspiring with rebel groups operating in the eastern part of DR Congo.

Last week Interpol said it had asked the DR Congo government to extradite Mr Kipoi to face charges of treason in Uganda. According to Mr Kiggundu, EC will through different channels, hold consultations with stakeholders as it seeks to conduct a free and fair by-election.
