The annual pilgrimage to the El Ghriba synagogue on the island of Djerba (Governorate of Medenine), officially started on Monday with a strong influx of worshippers from around the world to perform the ritual of the Jewish pilgrimage.
Perez Trabelsi, head of the organising committee of the Ghriba pilgrimage, told reporters the number of pilgrims reached this year around 7,000 people who came to perform the annual ritual in a climate of total security, noting that the event will see the participation of a number of political and diplomatic personalities.
The final stage of the pilgrimage is expected to take place Tuesday, with the "Procession of the Mnara", "in a sparkling and festive atmosphere, which will continue until late at night", added Perez.
The religious ritual of the Ghriba also has an undeniable tourist and economic dimension, in that its success shows the beginnings of a good tourist season, the organisers said.
For his part, the Minister of Tourism had examined the preparedness of the tourist units for the event in all respects and to improve the quality of the services in order to promote this tourist destination with a strong competitive potential.
