Court dismisses KCCA councillor case

Buganda Road Court yesterday dismissed a defamation case against Makindye Division Councillor Mr Allan Ssewanyana.

Grade One Magistrate Mary Kisakye acquitted Mr. Ssewanyana upon state attorney Ms Esther Nalungi’s failure to present in court witnesses but, instead presented documents showing that the parties to the case have decided to have an out of court settlement.
Subsequently, Magistrate Kisakye dismissed the case for want of prosecution.

Prosecution contended that between December last year and this year, while presenting his lunch time sports programmes at NBS TV and Top Radio, Mr Ssewanyana made defamatory statements against Top Bet Sports Betting Company (complainant).

It further stated that the suspect uttered statements that the company defaults payment to the winning clients and that it was created to swindle people’s money, an act that incited the masses to stop associating with it.

On March 23, Mr Ssewanyana was granted a cash bail of Shs 800,000 upon presenting five sureties each bonded at Shs1 million.
He secured his temporary freedom after spending three nights in Luzira prison.
