Climate change causing poverty – Luweero officials

Luweero. Officials from Kasana-Luweero Catholic Diocese have blamed the persistent poverty in the Greater Luweero sub-region on people’s attitude and climate change.
Through Caritas, an NGO supporting the development arm of the diocese, the officials say many impoverished households in Luweero, Nakaseke and Nakasongola districts are still held back by residents who are resistant towards development projects, an issue leaders at different levels ignored at the time of rolling out rehabilitation projects after the Liberation War in the early 1990s.
“Some people think it is not necessary to venture into development projects, including construction of permanent structures due to fear that war can erupt anytime, while many believe in handouts and do not want to work,” Fr Hillary Muheezagango told Caritas officials and project extension staff at a review meeting last weekend.
