Burkina/Security: UNDP offers equipment worth 320 million FCFA

The UNDP with the support of Germany and the European Union, handed over Thursday, a batch of equipment and materials including 8 pick-up vehicles and 121 motorcycles, for the benefit of the police and the gendarmerie of the Sahel and East regions, in order to strengthen their capacities against insecurity.

The UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) intends to support the Burkinabè government in its dynamics of reconquest and stabilization of areas affected by insecurity.

The UN body donated, on Thursday, May 25, 2023 in Ouagadougou, a batch of equipment and materials to the Ministry of Territorial Administration, Decentralization and Security for the benefit of police and security units. the national gendarmerie in the stabilization communes of the Sahel and East regions.

With a total value of approximately 320 million CFA francs, this donation consists of 8 pick-up vehicles, 121 motorcycles, 74 communication equipment, 50 GPS, 55 computers, printers, scanners, 370 complete medical relief kits and office supplies.

“This equipment is likely to solidify the operational capacities of the police and the national gendarmerie for the restoration of security in these stabilization zones,” said UNDP Resident Representative in Burkina Faso, Elsie Laurence-Chounoune.

For her, this equipment will also make it possible to ensure effective coordination of the interventions of the two and will finally promote strong mobility of the local units to be alongside the populations.

Something that will also, according to Ms. Chounoune, restore confidence in the state in its role of protecting rights and providing basic services.

She said that this first gesture will be followed in the coming days by a handover of night vision protective equipment, IED detection equipment and vehicles.

However, the resident representative of the UNDP specified that the acquisition of this first batch of equipment was possible with the assistance of the Embassy of the Federal Republic and Germany and the Delegation of the European Union in Burkina Faso. which intervene within the framework of the stabilization mechanism of the Liptako-Gourma region.

The Minister in charge of Territorial Administration, Colonel Boukaré Zoungrana, expressed his gratitude to the donors and reassured that the equipment will be used wisely.

"It's a timely donation because it contributes to the strengthening of the operational capacities of our defense and security forces, especially those of internal security, within the framework of achieving the main objective of the Transition, which is the restoration and the integrity of the national territory", he suggested.
