Burkina: Employees of real estate companies fear becoming unemployed

The employees of real estate development companies called on Friday, the trade union centers to lend them a hand, so as not to find themselves unemployed, if the land reform initiated by the government passes.

“Mrs. presidents of the central trade unions, we ask for your support in order to preserve our jobs within the real estate development companies”, declared Friday, their spokesman Moctar Traoré, during a press conference.

He felt that Bill 057 on real estate development will "purely" eliminate real estate companies, if it passes the Assembly. Anything that will expose, according to him, more than 46,000 unemployed employees.

However, continues Moctar Traoré, obtaining “an honorable job” in Burkina Faso is a matter of grace.

Mr. Traoré explained that a Burkinabè worker carries the load of at least five people

This is why he calls for preserving their jobs in order to save their families.

To do this, the employees of real estate development companies place their hope in the trade unions.

"We are committed to supporting the workers of real estate development companies," replied the general secretary of the Burkinabe trade union confederation, Olivier Guy Ouédraogo.

In his understanding, any problem that affects the moral and material interests of the workers, concerns the confederation.

“We are a workers' union and we must always stand behind them,” he insists.

Mr. Ouédraogo specifies that the support of his union does not relate to the struggle of the real estate developers whom he considers "enough" organized to defend themselves but to the workers who consider themselves victimized.

He nevertheless recognizes that major reforms such as the land reform have always had collateral damage and invites the government to carry out an impact study.

Otherwise, he concludes: “land reform in itself does not pose a problem for us”.

As a reminder, faced with the exponential growth in the number of real estate companies and the numerous “registered slippages”, the government adopted a reform project on March 29, 2023, aimed at preserving arable land for future generations.

However, the managers of the real estate companies believe that making the State the sole owner of the land threatens their survival and would be an open door for the misappropriation of plots.
