BRICS AGRICULTURE MINISTERS MEETING IN SOUTH AFRICA THIS WEEK

JOHANNESBURG-- Agriculture ministers from the BRICS grouping comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa are meeting this week in Mpumalanga Province where the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries is partnering with the provincial government to hosting the four-day event.

The theme for the 8th meeting of BRICS agriculture ministers is Climate Smart Approaches. The findings of the meeting will be tabled at next month's BRICS summit to held in Johannesburga.

Mpumalanga is an agricultural province that has been affected by climate change. The BRICS ministers are deliberating on ways to counter climate change in agriculture and hope to come up with ways of sustaining food security through agriculture.

We are sharing ideas with all the BRICS countries and neighbouring countries on the smart way of dealing with climate change, said Vusi Shongwe, the Mpumalanga Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Agriculture.

Officials participating in the summit will visit affected farmers to hear how they have survived. Climate change affects food security and the economy and rural areas and small farmers are the most adversely affected by climate change.
