Aga Khan Hospital Hosts Free Medical Camp (allAfrica.com)

Yustus Kansiime, a pharmacist at Aga Khan University hospital could not hold back his tears as he narrated how his 10-year-old brother developed Burkitts lymphoma, a cancer common in children below 12 years.

“He developed a painless swelling on his cheek in 2013 and was diagnosed with cancer. He received the recommended treatment but in 2014, he passed away,” said Kansiime.

The 2015 World Health Organization (WHO) annual report notes that 16 million people die prematurely before the age of 70 due to non-communicable diseases, with cancer-related deaths being the majority.

Dr Noleb Mugisha, the head of the comprehensive community cancer program at UCI notes that the top three cancers in Uganda – prostate cancer, cervical cancer and breast cancer – can actually be detected early.

Consequently, the Aga Khan University hospital has organized the second edition of the Acacia Mall Family Medical Camp.

Addressing the press on August 6, Martha Osiro, the centre manager for the hospital said this year’s camp which will run from August 21 to 23, and will focus on heart and cancer awareness.

Unlike last year’s camp that lasted two days and attracted 3,500 people, this year’s camp will run for three days and is expected to attract at least 5,000 people.

The free services will include cholesterol tests, pap smears, liver tests, ultra sound scans, dental checkups, gynaecology, and first aid among others.
