If there’s a happy man in town, it must be Joseph Kiyimba, the proprietor of Club Ambiance.
Had he known the success that would come with bringing his Masaka-based discotheque to Kampala, he would have made the move decades ago. Even with the not-so-nightclubby neighbourhood of Bukesa, Kiyimba’s investment has indeed paid off.
Since the Bukesa branch was opened in July by Buganda Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga, the nightclub has hosted the creme-de la-creme of this country. And now news coming in is that Uganda’s oldest band, Afrigo, is lined up to perform at the club this Friday. Going by the kind of patronage the band has, you can be assured that all roads will lead to Mengo-Bukesa this Friday.
Last Friday, it was the oldies night. In the DJ’s booth were the likes of Rasta Rob MC, Emma and Alberto to mix music from back in the day, as patrons in their teens, middle age and those above 50 danced away in the fully-packed club. The ‘middle class’ (in Ugandan context) made up most of the audience at the entrance fee of Shs 30,000.
The fee looked so little for the magnitudes that turned up, who later soaked their throats with spirits and soft drinks. Kampala businessman, Godfrey Kirumira, with his younger brother Moses Kalungi and Juma Seiko, had their names announced over and over by the DJs.
So far so good inside this club is real ambiance. Even for the picky ones, there is no reason to complain. The seats are nice and the toilets clean. Revellers were reminded that the oldies would be a permanent serving every last Friday of the month.
