Burkina: “A teacher who does not have authority cannot produce results”, professor

"A teacher who does not have authority cannot produce results", professor

Ouagadougou, April 12, 2023 (AIB)- A teacher who has no authority, cannot produce results, indicated last Friday at the microphone of the AIB, the teacher researcher in sociology of education at Joseph Ki Zerbo University, Dr Zakaria Soré, who has just released his new book entitled "The little treatise".

“In terms of counseling it's how to build authority in the classroom. Everything revolves around this aspect, because a teacher who does not have authority is a teacher who cannot produce results, ”noted the teacher researcher in sociology of education at Joseph Ki University. Zerbo, Dr Zakaria Sore.

For him, the question of authority must be adapted to the current context which prohibits the use of the whip which, in the past, was used to impress its power on the student.

“We had teachers dragged before the courts. There, the approach was to show the teacher how to build his authority without resorting to violence, ”he continued.

Dr Soré was speaking last Friday during an interview granted to a journalist from the AIB, on the release of his new work entitled “Le petit Traité” which advocates recommendations for quality teaching.

To this end, he has shown that the content of his book can help transform the teaching practices of teachers.

According to him, the teacher must have, at the social and pedagogical level, good relations with his environment and the parents of pupils and always be a model for society.

The teacher-researcher also recalled that in the past, actors in the educational world behaved as being “people living in a certain misery”.

He also advised primary school teachers to go beyond this conception of the profession, to rise and carry their profession with dignity.

The work "Small Treaty", according to the author, is a work of a hundred pages but which contains a certain number of recommendations and orientations in terms of teaching practice.

“The idea for this book comes from fact, from observing what is happening in the classroom, from the relationships that the teaching world has with the parents of students, the umbrella structures but also from the relationships with hierarchical superiors” , he specified.

Concerned Keta NDC Executives to boycott election if Jones-Mensah is disqualified

Some members of National Democratic Congress (NDC) known as ‘Concerned Branch Executives’ in the Keta constituency have threatened to boycott all election-related matters if Dr Emmanuel Kojo Jones-Mensah, a Parliamentary aspirant is disqualified from the race.

“The party is going through a lot of challenges in this electioneering period of parliamentary primaries owing to the activities of some vindictive, selfish, and greedy individuals. We the Concerned Branch Executives of Keta (CBEK) deemed it necessary to address this before it is too late.”

Mr Evans Agba, the convenor of the group at a press conference, said despite the vetting committee ascertaining the true party credentials of Dr Jones-Mensah following a frivolous petition, some people are still pushing hard for his disqualification.

He argued that Dr Jones-Mensah had a different solid proven political and social record as compared to all the past and present political leaders since 1992, and that none was able to do what he has done so far.

“He is constructing two critical bridges at Agorvinu and Hatorgodo-Lawoshime areas costing over GH?2million, whilst addressing other challenges in the areas such as infrastructure, job creation, and education, among others.”

Mr Agba indicated that the government and politicians had promised and failed the people of the area for the past 40 years, “but Dr Jones has come to redeem the situation.”

He said Dr Jones-Mensah has brought life to Keta politics and that any attempt to disqualify him would lead to a boycott of the parliamentary primaries and the 2024 general elections in the Keta constituency.

“Dr Jones-Mensah is our redeemer and we would not sit for any evil mind to prevail.”

Mr Agba in his argument, accused Dr Senanu Kwasi Djokoto, former party Chairman, who is also an aspirant in the race for appealing against the decisions of the vetting committee to clear Dr Jones-Mensah claiming he hadn’t stayed in the constituency for years, which makes him an unqualified per the party’s constitution.”

He added that Dr Jones -Mensa would be the only aspirant that could lead the NDC to victory in 2024 since the past candidates performed poorly resulting in an increase of votes for the New Patriotic Party from 1,665 in 2016 to 5,037 in 2020, an unprecedented jump of 500 per cent.

He urged all executives within the constituency to remain calm, as they hoped all parliamentary aspirants would be given a level playing ground to contest.

However, the leadership of the party is yet to comment on the petition raised against Dr Jones-Mensah.

On Wednesday, April 5, the Volta Regional Vetting Committee Chaired by Mrs Sherry Ayittey cleared five aspirants to contest the May 13 parliamentary primaries, in which Dr Jones Mensah was involved.”

Angolan president, DRC counterpart address situation in eastern region

Angolan head of State João Lourenço Wednesday in Luanda discussed with his counterpart from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Félix Antoine Tshisekedi the security and peace process in the Eastern region of this country, which faces an internal armed conflict.

Félix Tshisekedi, who had been in Luanda for a few hours, discussed with President João Lourenço, among the matters, the cantonment of the M23 forces, according to the understandings reached as part of the mediation exercised by the Angolan Head of State.

The Angolan mediation of the conflict in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) resulted in a ceasefire agreement in that region, since March 7 this year.

The Angolan National Assembly approved last month, at the request of the President of the Republic, unanimously, the deployment of a contingent of 500 soldiers from the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) to the DRC for a 12-month period.

The staff integrates a battalion of the FAA and their respective components, as well as financial means estimated at 11.2 billion kwanzas, within the framework of the budget of Defence and Security sector.

A contingent of the Angolan army should secure the cantonment areas of the M23 rebels and protect the members of the ad hoc verification mechanism, following the ceasefire between government troops and the rebels.

At a mini-summit on peace and security in the Great Lakes region, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on February 17, 2023, the African Heads of State and Government mandated" Angola, in coordination with the former President of Kenya, Uhuru Kennyatta, a facilitator appointed by the East Africa Commission, to hold contacts with the leadership of the March 23 Movement (M23) rebel group.

The M23 was created in 2012 when DRC soldiers revolted over the loss of power of their leader, Bosco Ntaganda, accused by the International Criminal Court (ICC) of war crimes and for alleged breaches of the peace agreement of March 23, 2009, which gives the name to the movement.

International Conference on Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) praised Wednesday in Luanda the role of parliamentary diplomacy in pacifying spirits and uniting peoples for a common future .

The recognition was expressed by ICGLR Executive Secretary while speaking to the press at the end of a meeting with the speaker of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira.

The ICGLR official noted that parliaments are institutions of great importance in the constant search for debate on the establishment of peace and security in the Greater Lakes.

He stressed, however, the work done by the female speakers of the parliaments of the ICGLR organisation (Angola, South Sudan, Tanzania and Zambia) in promotion of peace in the region.

"We have female speakers of parliaments, so we are using this condition to also show the world the role of female speakers of National Assemblies and what they can do for peace", he expressed.

The Angolan diplomat, at the service of the ICGLR, stressed that the meeting with the speaker of the Angolan Parliament is part of a plan of visits to entities in the member countries of the Great Lakes Region.

"I am proud, as an Angolan, to work towards strengthening cooperation relations not only with the Angolan Parliament, but with all the parliaments of the Member States of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region", stressed João Caholo.

The meeting highlighted the role of the parliamentarians of the countries of the region in the mediation and resolution of conflicts, in the promotion of peace through dialogue and coordination, to guarantee the necessary stability and security for the pacification and an effective peace.

The participants also addressed the importance of cooperation between the National Assembly and the ICGLR, in the area of specialty commissions, in addressing issues relating to human rights, defence and security and international relations.

Recently, the speaker of the National Assembly participated, in Juba, South Sudan, in the FP-ICGLR meeting that addressed, among other issues, the need for parliaments to be involved in efforts in favour of peace in the Great Lakes Region.
