Dear Doctor: I am 25 and my eyes itch a lot whenever I am sleepy. It also makes me feel like crying. What could be the problem?
me tired at bedtime, just before a person falls asleep. It is also common to have tired eyes at the end of a long day, after many hours of concentration during which, a person keeps their eyes open.
Rubbing tired eyes is a learned behaviour in human beings, which also helps us to try and remain awake.
Rubbing the eyes increases blood flow, making the eyelids feel less heavy. While this can be done to relieve itching, when the process is done rigorously, the eyes may tear in response (what you call crying).
However, sometimes, the eyes feel tired and itchy because of an allergic reaction for which a cause of allergy has to be sought and avoided to mitigate the problem. If this does not work, then medication should be sought.
Drugs called anti-histamines are commonly used to treat itching on any part of the body, but apart from making a person sleepy, it may not be as effective in treating itchy eyes.
