Uganda’s weightlifters at the Commonwealth Games are aware they are a step behind most of their opponents in terms of technique and readiness for the competition. However, they won’t let that derail them ahead of the action starting Thursday. What they lack in skill, they have tried to compensate with hard work. “We are determined to put up a decent show,” team captain Charles Sekyaaya vowed. Sekyaya will carry the weights alongside Becky Namusoke and Kalidi Batuusa.At the training gym, every team is allocated about two hours of work-outs daily. After the session, the teams are meant to vacate and create space for others. The Ugandans, though, in most cases last more than the allocated time and sometimes don’t leave until they are asked to. Already dazed by the modern facilities here, the Ugandans are bent on utilising the little time left to the maximum. “We must use every opportunity here,” Sekyaaya noted. “These are the best training facilities I have come across,” added the weightlifter, who represented Uganda at the 2012 Olympics in London. “In Uganda we need about three hours to finish a session due to limited space. Here a session lasts one hour. We are enjoying our training.” Sekyaaya and Batuusa also rubbished reports that they are struggling with injuries. “None of us is injured. If I seek treatment for a minor scratch there is no cause for alarm,” Batuusa said. Uganda has never won a Commonwealth Games medal in weightlifting.
