The Governor Bank of Uganda, Mr Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile, has been appointed the Chancellor of the International University of East Africa (IUEA). This is the first time Mr Mutebile is heading a university. In 2006, Makerere University appointed him honorary professor in the School of Economics and in 2009, Nkumba University awarded him a honorary doctorate degree.
In his acceptance speech at the university campus in Kampala at the weekend, Mr Mutebile said he was accepting the appointment because of the university’s vision to become the Technology University of Choice in Africa.“Africa lags behind other continents because we have not embraced technology. Looking at most of the things such as the internet and smart phones the world is proud of today, none of them is manufactured in Africa,” he said.
rof Noah Midamba, the vice chancellor KCA University Kenya, who was the chief guest, said it is absurd that the US continues snatching the best African brains to go and develop America leaving Africa with monumental challenges.
“We no longer need folks with meaningless college degrees. We need degrees which transform into job creation. We want to hear stories of laboratories which have transferred solutions to end poverty,” he said.
