Uspa rewards She Pearls for winning netball gold in Gaborone


The girls national netball team She Pearls received the Rwenzori-Uspa Award for May during the monthly dinner held at Imperial Royale Hotel on Thursday.

The girls won gold during the recent Africa Youth Games which were held in Gaborone, Botswana.The netball fraternity turned up in droves including Rita Nakkazi, who was a goal defender for Team Uganda at the Netball World Cup in Trinidad and Tobago in 1979.

The girls showed zeal and did what was expected of them,” said trip team manager Annet Kisomose. “It wasn’t smooth sailing all the way for them as seven of the 10 girls were sick on the same day due to food poisoning. But they bounced back and beat Kenya in the final. They were the best.”

The girls were full of praises for their coach Rashid Mubiru. One of the girls Joan Nampugu summoned her teammates to the podium to kneel down and thank the coach. The ‘She Pearls’ played against Zimbabwe, Namibia, Swaziland, Kenya and hosts Botswana.

In addition to the accolade, they received Shs500,000 which was handed over by Sumin Namaganda, Rwenzori Water’s Communications Manager.
