UPDF probing rebel activities in Masaka

Masaka.

The Uganda Peoples Defence Forces has disclosed that the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebel group and al-Shabaab are recruiting young people into subversive and terror activities.

This was revealed by the spokesperson for the UPDF Armoured Brigade, Maj Robert Kamara while addressing journalists in Masaka town on Tuesday.

He said the ADF and al-Shabaab terrorists have been identified in Masaka District and there is need for residents to be vigilant and report to the authorities incase they detect rebel activities.

He said the ADF have held rebel activities in the towns of Kyazanga in Lwengo District and Nyendo in Masaka Municipality where young people are being recruited. He said Masaka has become a transit area for rebels.

Maj Kamara warned parents who hand over their children to people who disguise themselves as teachers of religion yet these people are linked to rebel activities.

He said the police and UPDF had started surveilling Masaka ahead of the Easter festivities.

He urged owners of bars and lodges in Nyendo to be more vigilant and ensure they have proper identification of the people they host.

In the past
In April 2013, it was reported that ADF started a recruitment campaign in Kampala and other parts of the country.Sources reported that some 10 new recruits joined ADF forces every day.
