UMSC Warns Muslims Against Girl Child Education Neglect

The secretary for Education and Social Services of Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC), Ramadhan Mugalu, has cautioned Muslims against neglecting girl child education.

“The country can’t develop when the mothers are ignorant about education, health, economic and social sectors,” he said while meeting different sheikhs, imams and Muslim teachers from Mubende district on March 19 at Mubende Muslim district council headquarters.

The function was organised by the UMSC Population programme to disseminate a UMSC handbook titled “Towards a Happy Muslim Family”. The handbook was developed with support from UNFPA and the National Population Secretariat.

Mugalu said educating girls was one of the best ways of eradicating early and forced marriages.

“Girls who are well-educated in both secular and Islamic studies are less likely to fall victim to early pregnancies, since they would know their rights,” he said.

The senior national programmess officer at the Population Secretariat, Stella Kigozi Makumbi, commended UMSC for opening up such partnerships.
