UFL Returns As Kiu Take On UCU

After a three-month hiatus, the 2014 Nile Special University Football League (UFL) resumes today at the quarterfinal stage, when Kampala International University (KIU) host Uganda Christian University (UCU) at Nsambya grounds, writes Elly Kyeyune.

This year’s UFL adopted a ‘Champions league’ round-robin format whereby the 12 teams first played in two groups, from where the top eight teams proceeded to a two-leged knockout phase. The eight quarterfinalists include Gulu University, Kampala University, Kampala International University, Kyambogo University, Makerere University, Makerere University Business School (Mubs), Nkumba University and Uganda Christian University.

KIU progressed to the knockout stage after finishing third in their group and are facing a UCU side who finished second in their group. Speaking ahead of the game, KIU coach, Richard Wasswa said although his team didn’t play as well as he had wanted in the first round, he is confident they will overcome UCU.

“I have no doubt UCU will be a tough team to play but I have a lot of confidence in my team. We have prepared well during the break and the boys are eager to play,” Wasswa said.

“Our key target is to avoid conceding an away goal and we must score at least two goals so that we go to UCU with a comfortable lead,” he added

On the other hand, league debutantes UCU finished the group stageunbeaten are also confident they can overcome KIU. Even in the absence of star player Fred Kyambadde, who joined Fufa Big League side The Saints, coach Jackson Nyima is sure the rest of the team will fill the gap.

“Kyambadde is an excellent player and I am happy that he has moved on to bigger things. This will, however, not affect us too much as we are not a one-man team,” Nyima said.

“Basing on our performance in the first round, I am sure we will come away with a victory at KIU,” Nyima added.

The other ties this week see Kampala University host Kyambogo University on Thursday while Gulu University take on Mubs on Friday. Meanwhile, Makerere University will entertain Nkumba University on Sunday.
