Edwin Ekiring will have to roll a heavy rock out of his way to stand a chance of winning a Commonwealth Games medal. Uganda’s top badminton player has in his path tournament seed five Jahah Manuri Venkata from India. But before facing the Indian, All Africa silver medalist Ekiring, will have to negotiate his way past Ajfan Rasheed of Maldives in the men’s singles first round. “I know its tough facing Venkata but he’s not my biggest worry now. I have to first take care of the first round clash,” the Netherlands-based Ekiring, told Daily Monitor. “But I am here to give my best. I will play my best game and see how far it gets me.”Another Ugandan star Wilson Tukire has been drawn against Jaman Ayman from Bangladesh in his first round clash. The singles draw matches start next Tuesday. But today, Ekiring and Tukire must first lead Uganda in the mixed team event fixtures. Uganda have been drawn in Group B alongside neighbours Kenya, India and Ghana. “Our target is to at least make the quarterfinals,” offered Uganda’s coach William Kabindi, who has female player Daisy Nakalyango’s injury to worry about. “But we must be at our best since only the group winners are guaranteed an automatic last eight ticket,” he added. The group toppers will be joined by the best two losers from all the pools in the quarters. Uganda’s squash players Ian Rukunya and Michael Kawooya will also be in action today. The Kampala-based players have had several build-ups in Scotland organized by British High Commission’s Adam Clark and should put up commendable displays. Swimming in which Uganda is represented by Jamilah Lunkuse, Arnold Kisulo and Joshua Ekirikubinza, also gets underway today.
