Three lab technicians charged with faking HIV results

Ntungamo. Three laboratory technicians in Ntungamo District have been charged before the Grade One Magistrate’s Court for allegedly falsifying HIVAids results after receiving a bribe.
Ms Rose Kakiza, Mr Joram Kamugisha and Ms Deborah Katusiime appeared before Magistrate Francis Ndangwa on Thursday on charges of making a negligent act likely to spread infectious diseases contrary to the Penal Code Act.

According to the district criminal investigations officer, Mr Bosco Gume Ssalongo, the trio was arrested after being tricked by a couple pretending to be HIV discordant and wishing to enter marriage and the man claimed he wanted results showing he was HIV negative.
Mr Gume said the couple got everything they wanted on three occasions at Singa Kenneth Foundation Clinic and Classic Medical Centre both in Ntungamo Town and at Lab Cure Pride Clinic in Rubaare Town with laboratory attendants all giving HIV-negative results to the positive person who wished to have his sero-status presented as negative.

“A man and a woman claiming to be a couple wishing to wed, the man being HIV positive approached medical workers and he demanded that results be falsified in his favour and that the woman should not know his status. He paid some money and documents were issued to affirm his HIV negative status, the woman called us and we made arrests,” Mr Gume told Sunday Monitor. He said the incident exposed carelessness by medical workers.
