Three Cops Suspended

Three senior police officers attached to the Criminal Investigations and Intelligence directorate and the Flying Squad unit have been suspended for alleged corruption.

The three have been identified as Halimah Namatovu, the OC CIID Kyambogo University, Paul Yaaye, the OC CIID Kasangati police station, and Faisal Katende, attached to Flying Squad unit in Kampala.

“The Professional Standards Unit (PSU), which has been investigating the officers, has written to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) recommending their suspension. After suspending them, other actions will follow…,” the deputy police spokesperson, Polly Namaye, told The Observer on Tuesday at the police headquarters in Naguru.

According to Namaye, Namatovu was suspended for demanding money from complainants seeking police bond and forms to record statements. Yaaye is accused of irregularly arresting a local TV journalist in Kasangati last month.

“According to our investigations, the journalist was covering a fight over land in Kasangati involving alleged friends of the officer [Yaaye]. When the case was brought to Kasangati police, the CIID officer arrested the journalist for criminal trespass instead of the people who were fighting,” she said.

Katende was also suspended last week for extortion.

“There have been continuous complaints against him from the public that he extorts money from suspects before releasing them, and arrests others who fail to give him money,” Namaye said.

She said investigations were still ongoing and if the suspects were found guilty, they would be interdicted.
